Design Concept
For the headquarter representing its business image, we lay out two essential design principles. Firstly the busy production activities of the upper levels is an exciting contrast to the quiet, music-playing areas of the ground floor for exhibition, gathering and hosting the clients. Secondly, we also want visitors to feel curious about the flying clothes and the bamboo background. The close-knit dialogue between fabric and wood in the space embodies the craftsmanship of the enterprise.
Design Method
The five-story building of this multi-use complex accommodates the storefront and offices on the ground and second floors, while the textile factory is located on the upper floors. Integrating the functions of production, processing, and marketing in the same building, the design reveals the new image of the enterprise from an OEM company to an independent branding. We combine the two industries of the company involved in—textile and furniture—using fabric and bamboo as images for design concept and execution. The dialogue between the fabric and bamboo is also that between new and old industries. It also signals the moment of innovation and coexistence.
The first-floor exhibition center serves as the gateway of the business. The morphology of a frozen flag dominates the main sculptural wall. Using digital fabrication of thousands of thin bamboos, the dynamic, undulating lines fulfill a three-dimensionality from each perspective. The white paint on the front facade reduces the weight of bamboo and phases into the texture of the fabric. The gesture of flying flags animates the material, echoing the compatible creativity shared by bamboo and woods.
The grand hall serves as both lecture and exhibition space. The movable perforated panels on the center of the exhibition area create a spatial dynamism. On the other side, the sculptural wall confronts the steps of the exhibition area. The folding screens define the ambitious space on both sides. To the right is a semi-open meeting room framed by metal and glass components for gathering and discussion, maximizing the need for adaptive usage of commercial exhibition space.
