IVANA DABROVIC I ARHITEKTI

As part of the Benedictine monastery on the island of Lokrum, located in the vicinity of the old town of Dubrovnik, the exhibition entitled Lokrum Legends has been opened.

The exhibition has been designed to introduce Lokrum visitors to its rich and exciting history full of legends and rich cultural heritage and to revive and enliven this neglected cultural institution until its impending complete reconstruction.

The exhibition and the positive reactions of the public and the professionals alike have brought the space back to life.

Two legends have been highlighted in the exhibition this year. The first one is about Richard the Lionhearted, who, according to the legend, was shipwrecked on the island of Lokrum on his return from the Crusades and vowed to build a votive church on the island which saved him. According to the other legend, the Benedictine monks, who built the monastery and resided on Lokrum from the 11th to the 18th century, at dawn of their departure day put the famous curse on the island and on anyone who tried to acquire it for their own pleasure.

The concept of the exhibition resulted from the arrangement of spaces, one entrance and the separation of the two exhibition topics.

The exhibition is in the basement of the monastery and covers the area of 245 m2, which stretches over three rooms of different character, with arched stone vaults, earthen floor and stone pedestals, which were quite an inspiration design-wise and had a great influence on the decision to organise the exhibition in the ‘pop-up' style.

The whole exhibition is set on a raised platform offset from the walls, its edges are accentuated with lights, and furnished with light installations at the entrance. The exhibition panels with printed illustrations are made of waterproof plywood and are located in the central area, where they form a "Tunnel" separating the two topics.

The entrance to the exhibition is provided over a steep ramp with an arched stone vault, while the entrance to the main hall is a smaller arched opening, rendering it quite dramatic. This is enhanced by an arched light installation, the smell of incense, medieval music and the animation projection. There is also a ‘place of power’ in the main hall, which visitors can climb onto and look at the exhibition from above.

In the back room there is a screening of the film on the Benedictine curse, accompanied by the effect of water in the black steel pool.

At the end of the exhibition area there is a “confessional" with a prayer played in Latin and the book of confessions of sins.
