MOVING SHADOWS Tony Gallardo Garden of Botanical Interest The Dunes of Maspalomas Special Natural Reserve is the result of past and current depositions of coastal sand and sediment from the surrounding gullies, and the wind that fiddles with them like an artist who paints on canvas with a palette of colours. It is currently the single active sand dune field on Gran Canaria and a natural space of great value on the global scenario both in landscaping terms and due to the large number of species it contains, of high ecological importance and sensitivity. The project design provides for the restoration and revitalization of the garden, which currently extends over 9 hectares and a perimeter of 1,161 linear meters. Inside there is a waterway covering a surface or approximately 4,000 sq. meters. Two specific settings, interconnected by a network of pathways, are the main focus of the renovation works: - On one side, the creation of a garden of botanical interest that bridges the gap between the thermophile forest present at the base of the gully and the typical coastal vegetation. - On the other side, the upgrading, consolidation and preservation of the heart of the garden: a natural reserve and a shelter for birds. Once the proposed interventions have been put into place, the garden will transformed into a living ecosystem, balanced and well calibrated, able to host a new range of activities. Resource optimization is another key aspect towards minimizing maintenance requirements and reduce the overall consumption of energy. Also, visitors will benefit from an increase in the number of pathways for a better enjoyment of this oasis-like space, and educational signs along the different tracks and walkways, putting the spotlight on endemic and native species The interaction between visitors and the facility is guaranteed by the opening of two new entrances, together with the addition of furniture, extra routes and leisure areas Additionally, next to the renovated and new tracks and walkways, a series of sculptures will be displayed in a way that these will be able to converse both with the setting itself and the work of sculptor Tony Gallardo. The fencing, which shall replace the one that is currently in place, is made of pigmented and textured prefabricated reinforced concrete sections. These sections will be arranged facing many different directions to create a more dynamic scene. Besides the renovation and execution of the two existing tracks in the park, the project provides for the addition of a third track that will run along the fencing. The three trails will be interconnected at three points that start from the entrances, all of which are adapted for people with reduced mobility. All three tracks have different purposes and characters. First, the project includes the upgrading of the soft track, which is planned to be used for the supply of services and allow the necessary maintenance duties in the park. The existing gravel and sand track will be reconditioned and revamped. The second track, made of imprinted concrete, runs along the distance of the water course. This one will be equipped with accommodation areas and furniture. Finally, the third track is configured as a widening of the fencing, with observation points looking out to the park where all the informational signs will be located.
To play is to learn, and it is also to teach, and to create, and to find, and to tempt fate, and to befriend, and to experience, and to remember, and to represent, and to superimpose, and to compete, and to enjoy, and to surprise, and to amaze, and to communicate, and to feel, and to think, and to live, and to win and lose, and to satisfy, and to travel, and to collect, and to direct, and to dream, and to venture, and to risk, and to talk, and to fantasize, and to trust, and to confess, and to confirm, and to expose, and to practise, and to know, and to entertain, and to suggest, and to seduce, and to plot, and to draw, and to build, and, above all, to project and imagine. There are also negative definitions, the least, in which the action of playing refers to deceiving, to cheat, to waste time, to take advantage, to be disloyal, but even these negative actions require the knowledge, skills, and intelligence of the malicious person who is practising them.
