The project is located in the Dongba area of Chaoyang District, Beijing, China, adjacent to Dongba Country Park. It is located in a 5,000-mu natural environment with beautiful scenery and fresh air. The project is commissioned by the Zhangzhe Youshan and is the second phase of the project.

At present, with the aging of the population, the functions of the old-age care services of traditional families are becoming weaker, and the demand for social welfare and services by the elderly is increasing, making pension function more dependent on society. Although China's pension industry is developing rapidly, most of the old-age care institutions are still traditional apartment-oriented, focusing mostly on elderly people who can take care of themselves. For the demented elderly group who suffer different degrees of decline in their ability to live and their cognitive ability, traditional old-age care institutions cannot provide comprehensive care services. This project is a comprehensive organization that integrates old-age services and medical services for the disabled and demented elderly groups. WS Architects provided plane planning and interior design services.

The Disability and Dementia Rehabilitation Center is a three-story building with an area of 2,830 square meters. On the ground floor, designers divided the space into four major parts: the office space, the medical area, the courtyard, and the reception area. The first and second floor contains residential areas, public areas, and offices.

Most of the patients who are suffering from cognitive impairment have multiple problems, such as poor coordination, losing the concept of time and space, which will ultimately lead to a person’s inability to perform activities of daily living, followed by total loss of independence and death. The management staff in the organization, considering the unique conditions of their patients, need faster response speed. Therefore, our team focused on the core needs of the patient and the staff while designing the project.

Based on the building structure of the column-shaped building and the physical condition of the disabled and the demented elders, our team chose circular streamline to distribute the functional area in order to prevent the overly complicated moving line from confusing the patients. The circular movement line also effectively reduced the walking time of the staff from one point to another, making it easier for them to attend the elderly. The living space of the first and second floor is divided into group areas around the rehabilitation courtyard. Each group area has several rooms, which can accommodate nine to twelve elderly people. The group area is to help the elders get familiar with their living environment quickly. Each group area has a separate dining and living room. There is also a medical station in each group area, which is convenient for nursing staff to care for the elderly or provide emergency medical assistance.

Considering the characteristics of the patient group, our designer chose a variety of natural colors with low saturation as theme color for each separate area. Serve not only as decorative furnishings, but the colors of each space can also help the elderly quickly understand their location.

The entire project is targeted at the disabled and the demented elderly, therefore, our designers strictly follow the requirements of the “Accessibility Design Standards” and plan a complete set of facilities to meet the accessibility needs of the patient. Such as gentle ramps at the entrance and corridors, fixed handrails on both sides of the stairs. The height of each toilet in the bathroom is customized, bathroom anti-skid and anti-fall handrail are installed, emergency alert planted...

Since the 20th century, people believe that there is a strong connection between health and nature. The positive effect nature has on human health has been unanimously acknowledged and many medical care and rehabilitation institutions in Western countries are using the theory to accelerate patients’ recovery both physically and mentally during rehabilitation. Our designer integrated natural elements into the whole design, to create a natural healing atmosphere where body and mind can be wakened.
