y level. The floating gesture frees a large shaded space as a garden which immediately connects the surrounding landscape. This main entry level, thus, becomes one of the public ‘decks’ in this cruise, where people can share and enjoy leisure activities.
The depth of the main building is managed to be thin to promote natural ventilation which is very welcoming in the subtropical area like Hainan. Cantilevered balconies are provided all around four directions on each level to create linear private garden adjacent to each guest room.
Within the entire hotel, there are intertwined layers of garden system. Gardens are as green voids penetrating and interlocking different zones horizontally and vertically to make spaces permeable, fluid and playful. Besides the cantilevered private garden and the shaded garden on the main entry level, there are ‘between floor tree gardens’ shown as a series of giant ‘holes’ on the main entry deck level. These gardens connect the main deck to the levels below to create tranquil garden spaces adjacent to the lower-level functions. There is also a series of sky gardens in the main building. They are of different themes in terms of colors and scents from local plants for people to enjoy. They also work as wind passage ways to provide pleasant micro-climate on each guest room level. Among all the gardens, the ones on roof decks are the most celebrating and cheerful. They are shaded by sail-like canopies and incorporated with roof top transparent swimming pool and bar, become one of the major attractions for the entire hotel, especially at night.
Besides all the gardens celebrating the rich regional landscape, the waterscape on site is another major landscape design feature. Being on the largest island in China, though away from the coast, the guests can remotely or symbolically recall the concept of ‘Sea’ by experiencing water on site. Two grand sheers of water curtain connecting different levels of the building vertically give mysterious and fairy tale style atmosphere to the place. The water veil is seemingly poured down from the swimming pool, creating more drama to the site.
As to the material palette of the project, the most light-weighted yet the most iconic one is the ETFE cushion canopy. From the top of the building to the ground, the canopy system carries the image of cloud, sail or kite etc. while providing the shade and shelter for the outdoor space. It will glow during the night. The main building part (upper levels) is the steel structure with metal cladding, while the lower part rooted in earth is bared concrete structure.
The project adopts a series of green design strategies.
1. The sun shading strategy: the cantilevered areas in the main building provides efficient shading to the guest room levels; the ETFE cushion canopies provide controlled day lighting and solar heat to the space covered.
2. Natural ventilation strategy: in all guest rooms, the gardens in guest room levels, the roof top under-canopy area and the main entry level floating area natural ventilation is promoted. The ‘between floor tree gardens’ help vertical air flow and exchange.
3. Rainwater collecting and recycling system: the ETFE canopies are used as funnels to collect rainwater; treated rainwater is reused for landscape purpose or reducing the heating load of the cooling tower.
4. In the lower levels of the building covered by earth, underground tunnel wind is used for cooling down the temperature of adjacent spaces.
