Hangzhou is awarded the right to host the 2022 Asian Games (XIX ASIAD). The Asian Games Village site is located along the east coast of Hangzhou Qiantang River, close to the Qianjiang Century City CBD. The masterplan covers 2.96 km2, which is 3 km away from the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center (Asian Games main stadium area).

The Athlete Village will accommodate all involved with the Asian Games; from performing athletes, to referees and media personnel. The future aim is to incorporate the village into Hangzhou’s Central Business District – and will do this by making place for businesses and trade. The forward-thinking village will accommodate 60,000 inhabitants, and will encourage a fully sustainable and environmentally friendly standard of living for society.

The total land-area of planning is 3.26 km2, of which 2.41 km2 will be dedicated to the construction of the Asian Games Village. A controlled green belt along the Zhegang Railway will comprise 0.55 km2, and the Qiantang Riverside Park area will comprise 0.3 km2.
The planning of this area is in close proximity to the main stadium for the Asian Games.
Taking inspirations from the old town of Hangzhou, the riverbank will surround a Water-Park. This blue axis will encourage activity and positivity throughout the entire sport village. The new Water Channel will act as a main city axis linking all major programs and functions.
Its function after the Asian Games 2022 will be a major recreational and leisure area for the inhabitants of the city of Hangzhou. The Riverbank will provide the new Water Town with pollution-free air and purification of water. This will merge the built-up urban areas with a rural atmosphere, and will promote sustainable city living. Ecological research should be supported through education and research (Educational Centre, Urban Farming, Purification systems).

The masterplan of the Asian Game Village involves the design of a commercial part that stretches along the length of the water channel. This should enable residents and visitors the opportunity to have a meeting place and several functions.
The commercial part is located on the south bank of the so called East Part of the Waterpark. “Hangzhou Riverbank Leisure and Shopping Promenade“ contents 15.000 m² brutto of commercial spaces, services, gastronomy and leisure indoor facilities. Despite the length of 1 km, the content and the subdivision are very pleasant. The long commercial line is broken by open courtyards and several seating opportunities, situated on the riverbank as well as on the roof. The visitors can access the commercial part from the street or from the riverbank promenade.
