This new home’s kitchen is designed around the owners’ passion for cooking. The challenge of this design was to create a highly functional cook’s kitchen to be the central feature to family life that also blends with the elegant simplicity of the house. The kitchen is an important social space, designed to accommodate family cooking events that often include willing guests. Prominently located within the home’s main public space, the kitchen views over the interior communal living areas and exterior landscape. The north-facing wall unites kitchen, living and dining with large floating art panels that are designed to feature the owners’ painting collection.
A large food pantry and a wine room anchor a 13-meter long “u-shaped” counter for cooking and food preparation. Its spatial concept carries forth the home’s visual openness, materials and design features. Therefore the kitchen perimeter surfaces and flooring are the same stone materials that are used throughout the entire house.
Inside the kitchen, two sinks, two convection ovens and two refrigerators surround a centrally located 8-burner stove island that faces the prime landscape view. The appliances are all professional quality stainless steel that visually coordinate with the surrounding custom designed stainless steel casework. The workspace is designed for durability, ease of use and minimum maintenance. Ample storage drawers have specialized compartments to house cooking utensils and dishes. Small appliance centers are concealed inside tall cabinets.

Curriculum
Audrey Matlock Architect is an architectural practice based in New York and working internationally. We embrace a modern sensibility that promotes innovation for both its functional and creative promise. Our work explores new combinations of material, structural and spatial relationships that eschew predictability and embrace inspirational and poetic experience. The interaction of technological expression with space, light and form creates projects that are visually refined and functionally finely tuned.
Our projects cover a range of building types and scales, built in cities and landscapes with equal specificity. The urban context is envisioned as a vibrant work in progress where buildings expand on a complex urban history and animate the public realm. In rural settings, a symbiotic and sustainable relationship between buildings and nature intertwines architecture, landscape, topography and climate with human occupation.
