The investor intended to renovate the roof of an older bourgeois house into an apartment of 275m2. Existing roofing gets light from the east side (towards the road) and from the west side (atrium). The best view is on the south side, where there’s a panoramic view of city centre. In the central part of the roof there is a staircase. Under the ridge of the roof there are in built chimneys. The construction of the roofing is executed with rhythmic hangers that carry the roof. The construction limits the space, but at the same time with its rhythmic structure offers possibilities for a new intervention.
The design is based on the light that penetrates the space and the orientation of the view from the ‘Canyon’. Within the structure of the construction shell, "gorge" is placed as the central living space throughout which the natural light penetrates and directs the view towards the south. The gorge rhythmically spreads from the north side to the south side, where there is a covered terrace that offers a panoramic view of the city.
The central space by function is a living room - a living room and communication between the other rooms. In this way, it replaces unnecessary corridors that appear in the conventional arrangement. The central area extends into the bay on the south side on the west side, where there is a dining room, a kitchen and a fitness room. He also opens up to the north armchair and a storage room. Bedroom with wardrobe and bathroom is located on the east side of the terrace. Two children's rooms are on the east side, while the other two rooms are on the west side by the staircase.
An elevator is placed next to the staircase, with an entrance to the apartment from the elevator shaft in the first level of the attic. The last flight of stairs transforms into a hallway closet.
The design offers a possibility of alteration of an apartment into two apartments.
The construction of the roofing is maintained to the greatest possible extent. The wooden tensioning connecting the main brackets is replaced by a metal rod.
Up to a height of 240cm, the walls in the central room are painted in sand color. The floors in the living, sleeping and terrace areas are carried out in wooden flooring (so called ship's or deck floor). As a part of the central space, a multipurpose cupboard in the form of an inflated bulge is installed on the wall of the living area, right beside the seating area. The design principle derives from the formation of a gorge. The cabinet combines the functions of the fireplace and shelves for the TV.
The illumination of the central space is carried out by hanging lights which are clamped into the ridge. The lamps create a virtual light plane, thus replenishing the volume of the "Canyon".
