DA MARIA RESTAURANT IN BALI, SEMINYAK

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(ENGLISH VERSION)

The central concept of Da Maria Restaurant in Seminyak, Bali, for the famous Australian restaurateur, Maurice Terzini, was to create an Italian courtyard garden restaurant inspired by those from the 1960's on Capri and the Amalfi Coast.

The restaurant gives one the feeling of being outside even though the space is airconditioned when needed. Climbing vines, large rubber trees.

The Da Maria restaurant creates a spatially and visually very rich experience with simple, cheap elements such as paint or elements by local artisans.

Architecturally the restaurant is very simple and formed of few elements:

- a large rectangular space with big circular skylights/cut outs in the ceiling. From these descend vines;

- a central axis from front temple to entrance foyer, bar, skylights, fountains and chandeliers that continue outside and culminate with a fountain and hanging chains;

- semi circular voids along the boundary wall filled with large rubber trees and creepers;

- situated three fountains underneath the skylights around which one can sit, cooled by the sound of running water;

- bar and kitchen areas create asymmetrical volumes along the main wall;

- large festoon chandeliers reinterpret the informal, naked globe lighting of traditional Italian courtyard restaurants.

The ceiling was on of the most visible elements in the restaurant so LPA decided to use a series of Pontiesque motifs to decorate it. The meeting of the diamond geometry creates stripes of varying width along the walls.

The project creates the stage on which the restaurateur Maurice Terzini, can perform with the crew. Preparing, grilling, roasting, frying and serving become key theatrical moments of the experience that together with the bars make for a wonderful night out.

Everything was made in Bali. The chairs and tables are our version of the French fer forgé style. It was very exciting to work with such talented people, always with a smile. Modifications were made to prototypes and readily delivered.

Da Maria in Bali is very today but timeless. As in all of our projects it has a classical quality to it that won't date. It already feels like it has always been there, that it was the only logical thing to do on that site.

A timeless classic, as the other restaurants we have designed for Maurice, without doubt one of the world's greatest restaurateurs and a continuous inspiration to us.
