Kitchen Design Special Contest  /  Completed
HØLTE
HØLTE were commissioned to design a new kitchen for a Victorian property that had been recently extended. The open plan living space, which provides functions as kitchen, dining and daytime living sits at the rear of the house and open directly onto the garden. Considering the room is so heavily used, the design of the kitchen is absolutely critical – it needed to be both beautiful and practical and reflect the owner's love of rich texture and colour.

HOLTE'S wood range was specified for the base cabinetry; the crown cut European Oak which has been bookmatched with the grain running through creating a strong visual identity to the kitchen. Local veneer specialists add a hardwood oak lipping before bonding veneer to the face of each panel, carefully matching the grain by hand. The Oak brings a natural warmth to the space which sits perfectly with the concrete effect porcelain floor tiles. The black powder coated steel handles create architectural accents complimenting the tones of the wood.

The wall cabinetry is finished in Conifer green furniture linoleum creating a striking contrast to the wood. Furniture linoleum has a very tactile quality with a completely matte finish, which is fingerprint resistant making a great material for architectural kitchens. The lino is bonded onto a colour core black mdf and then CNC machined to create seamless integrated handles, after which the edges are finished by hand.

A leathered granite was specified for the worktop as the owners are very keen cooks and required a highly durable work surface. A natural stone was selected to complement the oak and dark green finish to the kitchen.

The geometric pattern of the tiled splashback creates strong graphic interest and the orange grout contrasts the green lino in a playful manner. Additionally a folded steel orange shelf acts as a design feature creating a pop of colour, as well as practical storage for items that are used regularly.

The kitchen has been planned with an under counter fridge, to maintain aesthetic openness along the whole run. This ensures that the kitchen maintains clean lines that don't interfere with the other functions of the open plan room either practically or aesthetically. The wall cabinets were specified as 600 x 600mm square units to ensure they didn't make the kitchen feel top heavy, especially considering their dark green colour. A bulkhead was then constructed above the cabinets to allow the extractor ducting to be seamlessly concealed.
