It is difficult to make the case for a specific typology when dealing with such assignment as showing collectible cars. We focused on two criteria: create a form that would be both distinctive/in relation to the existing building (a mid-19th century castle) as well as architecturally expressing that form in a manner that recalls the experience of looking at a vintage collectors car and new automobiles. In many ways this is a similar methodology as Futurists in trying to create a relationship between movement and form.
This we achieved by considering a doubly curved & asymmetric roof shape, square in plan with a single high point, visually connecting the new roof with the existing roof pitch of adjacent castle. Our wish was for the shape to point towards the old building and complete the composition, rather than create an absolute new focal point. A similar strategy was applied to the building facades where the intent was to create non-compete surfaces with the castle masonry blocks (small scale, rough cut, prominent joint).
All load baring elements are located on the outer & inner courtyard perimeter, allowing for full flexibility of layout inside. The building is clad with ultra-high strength concrete panels so each panel is a single element, providing the tactile and visual quality required for our design intent. Ultra-high strength concrete provides many advantages: uninterrupted panels up to 6m in length, extremely rigid, durable and smooth surfaces.
The inner courtyard by allowing natural light in at the building core provides a perspective interlayer which separates the exhibition area from a private apartment on the opposite side. An all structural glass corridor connects the building to the castle, transparency mediating between opacity. The overall material selection strategy was very much guided by one self-imposed constraint: establishing a tight relationship between form and function. As a result, the inner-courtyard is made of motorized doubly glazed curved glass panes, the façade panels are not mechanically connected to one another, there is no flashing on top of panels and roof panels are cut to exact shape of surface.
Because both building sit at the very center of a gorgeous park, the circle shaped inner courtyard within the circle also relate to a larger context in wanting to geometrically encompass the land around and create a sculpture like structure that responds to the overall scale.
