On the former plot of its mother house the Bethanien Deaconess-Foundation established a new diaconal ensemble consisting of three buildings. The massive reinforced concrete and masonry construction is emphasized by the distinctive red-brown exposed brickwork with subtle shading. This design links the new construction with the existing buildings of the surrounding. Several exposed concrete elements of the façade – such as cornices, balcony parapets or the supporting structure of the colonnade – reference the old mother house of the nurses home Bethanien. A new project-related development plan with high noise-insulation requirements allowed planning residential units on this site.
Partly double-skin windows allow a high sound protection. The curved steel panels in front of the sound insulation windows are at the same time parts of the façade design. The special feature of the inner courtyard is its colonnade: a delicate exposed concrete colonnade in the centre of the ensemble follows the motif of an old cloister. The buildings have extensive green roofs with intensive vegetation in the terrace areas, which are mostly in use by inhabitants with dementia. Several inner courtyards connecting the building with each other give the ensemble its name.
The new building group provides residential units for the deaconesses as well as common spaces for the Evangelical Methodist community of Bethanien. Additionally a modern nursing home with 68 residential units for assisted living has been established as a part of the ensemble.
