Located at the intersection of two tree-lined streets that overlook San Francisco, the Buena Vista Residence respects the neighboring scale while skillfully addressing its challenging triangular corner lot. A concrete plinth anchored into the steeply slope site, supports two wood clad volumes connected by a glass atrium. The variegated grain and warm tone of the redwood siding complement the structured lines and simple detailing of the façades.

An exterior staircase provides a bold approach to the home’s second floor, double height entrance. The calm interiors echo the simplicity of the exterior detailing. Expansive walls seemingly float above the floors and provide ample space for the owner’s extensive art collection. Thoughtfully placed high-performance windows frame views of the city skyline and San Francisco Bay and allow an abundance of natural daylight to filter into the home. Taking advantage of the temperate San Francisco climate, operable windows passively cool and ventilate the house while radiant floors provide heating throughout. A deep overhang wraps around the southern and eastern facades, shading the larger glass windows from the summer sun while allowing for solar heat gain in the winter months.

An elegant steel and wood staircase ascends to a cantilevering catwalk spanning the third floor, connecting the master bedroom suite and exterior roof deck. The roof deck provides a large exterior living space, extending the interior’s connection to surrounding city. The interior spaces are enhanced by the abundance of natural light flooding into the home.

Reclaimed and locally sourced materials were selected for both the interior and exterior finishes whenever possible. The exterior redwood siding was reclaimed from the nearby Moffet Field’s Hanger One. Additionally, ceramic tiles installed at the fireplace surround, kitchen backsplash, and master bathroom are hand crafted by manufacturer located less than two miles from the home.

Flanking the home, the sloping corner and rear yards are landscaped with a mixture of native San Franciscan grasses and drought tolerant plants, specifically chosen to complement the color and texture of the neighboring foliage.

A result of close collaboration between the owner and the architect, the Buena Vista Residence quietly achieves an ideal balance between a minimal design aesthetic and a comfortable living experience.
