Voyage Torba, a scattered hotel on the Aegean Sea
By Editorial Staff -

Torba is a small, still largely unspoiled seaside town near Bodrum, Turkey. Covering some eighteen acres (7.4 ha), Voyage Torba is its largest accommodation facility. The property comprises five separate areas, each with different building types designed to cater to different needs.

Given the hugely disproportionate size of the property compared to the town itself, the focus of the designers from Baraka Architects was to strike a balance between the complex and its built and natural surroundings. Their priority was to avoid the compartmentalized organization typical of mass-market hotels by identifying strategies for blending the property into the town itself.

This led to the creation of a scattered hotel with designs that take their cue from the town’s existing architecture. This includes buildings with the open, semi-open, and closed spaces typically found in the Aegean and Mediterranean climates, and a sparse distribution of buildings along narrow streets, cul-de-sacs, and paved courtyards.

This approach has given Voyage Torba the appearance of a genuine, close-knit family neighborhood, with meandering spaces that enliven the setting, further enhanced by games of light and shade, and abundant local plants.

In his book The Eyes of the Skin – Architecture and the Senses, Juhani Pallasmaa argues that in today’s world, in which sight seems to be the only sense fast enough to keep pace with the astounding increase of speed in the technological world, the role of architecture should be to focus on all the other senses.
