Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort

The Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort is a hotel complex on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, in a charming position between the sea and the mountains that surround Lagoa do Fogo, a crater lake. 

Designed by m-arquitectos, the resort has a main building with a restaurant, bar and pool, and 14 guest villas. The low buildings, with plentiful glazing that invites in the surrounds, merges into the landscape through the choice of materials like cork for the external cladding and wood for the window and door frames. 

Inside, concrete finishings were the order of the day for the floors and walls, creating an evident reference to the colors so typical of the volcanic Azores. 

Mapei’s contribution to the project was to provide the materials needed to fix the external cork cladding in place (Keralastic adhesive) and to create the concrete surfaces inside (Ultratop Loft). After treating the base with Primer SN+Quarzo 0,5 and Eco Prim Grip, the coating was done using two spreadable cementitious pastes, Ultratop Loft F and Ultratop Loft W (coarse and fine grain, respectively), with two layers of Primer G between these. The final protective coating for the surfaces was done with Mapefloor Finish 52 W and Mapefloor Finish 58 W. 

Mapei’s final contribution was to waterproof and lay the ceramic coating for the pool. For this, Mapelastic, Mapeband and Mapenet 150 were used for the waterproofing, Keraflex Maxi S1 as the adhesive and Kerapoxy CQ for the grouting.
