The new headquarters of software giant Oracle in Cinisello Balsamo just outside Milan were recently inaugurated. The wide-ranging renovation project of the former building by DEGW Italia included a complete façade facelift with a curtain walls in glass and aluminium insulating panels on all elevations. The interior layout provides large open office spaces interspersed with a few enclosed environments running along the outer glass façade. Located at the corners of the buildings, the meeting rooms are naturally lit on two sides. Omnitex was given the brief of providing sun shading that would filter natural light and control thermal irradiation. Roller blinds in Screen, a polyester-fibre and PVC fabric with a mesh size of 3%, were installed. In the corner meeting rooms, a similar blind fabric was used, this time with a mesh size of 1%. These fabrics allow natural light to filter inside but eliminate glare and reflections on video screens. The result is natural yet diffused light best suited to the human eye. There are also energy savings from lower reliance on artificial lighting. In addition to the screen blinds, centrally controlled motorized dim-out blinds were also installed in the conference room to enable full darkening for video projections.
