Métal 57

A Top Quality Envelope for a Contemporary Renovation

Simeon has participated in the project

Founded in 1969, Simeon has its roots in the industrial heartland of north-eastern Italy and over the years it has added significant technical expertise, an international outlook and prestigious European and international clients to its portfolio. Its blend of technical and human know-how underlies its capacity to manage complex engineering projects and systems, such as building envelopes, façades and structural architectural elements in glass, steel and aluminum for grade A buildings.

A good example of this is the recently completed Métal 57 development on the rivers of the Seine in Boulogne-Billancourt, a commune in the south-western suburbs of Paris. Designed by Dominique Perrault Architecture, the project is a conversion and extension of a historical industrial building. The redone complex is slated to become a new headquarters for BNP Paribas Real Estate, but it was originally designed by Claude Vasconi in the mid-1980s for Renault and later, in 2004, partially overhauled using a design by Jakob + MacFarlane to create event and exhibition space.

The latest design seeks to create a dialogue between the original construction and the new extension, housing contemporary offices and open spaces for public use. The project deliberately creates a dialogue between the original structures and the new extension, but it also forges a relationship with the city, providing open spaces for the general public and visitors to use. For example, a new square has been added along with, inside the building, a food hall, an auditorium, a conference facility and a gym.

The new addition will also have a panoramic green terrace that will both provide an extra community space and help improve local biodiversity.

The main building in the Métal 57 project deliberately retains the industrial esthetics for the exterior, for which Simeon had to produce 3,340 façade units, covering
17,800 sq. m. Alternating single and double skin cells, with external aluminum molding, were installed on the outer elevations, while on the internal façades for the two patios single skin cells were mounted, with reflective aluminum sheets marking the levels.
