Everbright Kindergarten: a bamboo fairytale village for a community
By Editorial Staff -

GEEDESIGN has designed the Everbright Kindergarten, a scattered, multifunctional development that might just bring to mind a fairytale village. The project establishes an ongoing relationship between nature and the city, between people and where they live.

Foshan, China, is a city where the ancient and modern coexist. GEEDESIGN’s Everbright Kindergarten project is part of its ongoing environmental and urban renewal plans.

Located at the intersection of Chuangfu Road and Chuangxing 7th Road, an industrial area of the city, the site’s limited size was a hurdle for the architects. Covering a little over an acre (5400 m2), the site needed to accommodate a kindergarten with twelve classrooms, a large music room, and two activity areas.

The architects took the many limitations as their design cue and created an educational center that doubles as a cultural hub for the local community. Hence the metadesign concept of the fairytale village.

To solve the problem of limited space, the design centers on the concept of a small village – a series of scattered buildings, each related to the next. In this way, it was possible to establish a dialogue between each unit while adding to the visual variety of the area.

Establishing a close relationship with its natural surroundings, the facade combines bamboo and wood, the materials underscored by their contrast with white paint. The goal was to create a building that integrates organically with the existing environment, while enhancing the end user’s experience.
