Architect practice Lombardini 22’s upgrade of a central Milan office building involved putting in new electrical and air-conditioning systems and changing the external window- and doorframes. The new façade design took care not to stray too far from the original appearance; the main elevation on Via Turati remains part of the continuous street façade and has retained its ground floor with shop windows, five tiers of windows and roof overhang. Change has been achieved more subtly, playing with depth and shading with the creation of large square double-glazed windows in different colours that project approximately 40 cm from the façade almost to become bow windows. The new windows have been designed to comply with thermal and soundproofing regulations and to ensure the visual comfort of occupants. Stringent local solar-factor and energy-saving constraints have been met with the use of ScreenLine, the double-glazed unit with incorporated blind. The 35 new “bow windows” designed and manufactured by Thema are insulated and clad in alucobond. The outward-opening windows are thermally insulated Schüco AWS102 units. The internal ScreenLine SL27C Venetian blinds can be manually tilted via an external knob placed at a convenient distance from the window frame itself. The tilt-only mechanism is designed to enable easy manoeuvring of extensive shading elements. The building’s internal façades have also been upgraded. Here Schüco AWS 70 windows have been combined with ScreenLine SL24P integrated Venetian blinds. The tilt-only operability is via an external side knob actuated by a patented magnet system.
