Architecture, art and technology
The first building in New York by Zaha Hadid Architects is a luxury housing block in Chelsea along the city’s iconic High Line. The 11-story building completely upturns the typically hard angles of New York condominiums, using a series of interlaced chevrons on the façade in a symbiosis of steel and glass that alludes to the history of this great city’s architecture and recalls the old industrial spirit of the West Chelsea neighborhood. The 39 units range from 90 to 550 sq. m, each with the latest technology, luxury finishings and elegant design details. The residents can also enjoy a large swimming pool in the basement, an IMAX theater and a fully equipped fitness center. The complex also includes four art galleries and a sculpture garden that are open to the public, allowing a glimpse of the merging of art and architecture at the heart of this project. Stahlbau Pichler was central to the design and creation of the façades, including a design assist agreement with the architects. This cooperation was essential to create the fluidity and continuity embodied in the design, while meeting American safety regulations, especially for hurricanes. The glazing on the façade can be divided between straight (4,200 sq. m) and curved panels (800 sq. m) plus 2,000 sq. m of motorized windows with a mechanized system integrated into the profiles and safety sensors for automatic closure. The façades merge shapes, transparency and changing hues, with even the metal in two colors - bronze and silver - to add dynamism to the structure and underscore the curving nature of the composition.
