The world’s largest urban shopping centre - Westfield Stratford City - stands in the Stratford district of London, close to the Olympic Park that has been at the heart of the regeneration of what was once one of the city’s most rundown areas. The shopping centre is a multi-storey complex with 260 stores, an area dedicated to leading fashion brands, 70 coffee houses and restaurants, and a massive “local” market. It also has a multiplex cinema, fitness and spa areas, a bar with a sweeping view of the Olympic Park, three hotels, offices and a casino. Mapei provided both products and systems for the floor substrates and the laying of tiles for an area of 6,000 m2 that will see significant pedestrian traffic. The substrates for the tiles were largely created using the self-levelling and smoothing Ultraplan Maxi and then a Mapetex anti-fracture membrane was glued into place using Keraquick adhesive mixed with Latex Plus. The same adhesive was also used in the laying of the tiles. The joints were grouted with Ultracolor Plus mortar as the DropEffect® and BioBlock® technologies used in this product mean it is extremely water repellent and resistant to mould. The expansion joints were sealed with Mapesil AC. The floor of one of the two large department stores in the shopping centre was laid using Elastorapid, with the joints grouted with Ultracolor Plus. In the other department store, the floor was created using with Ultratop self-levelling mortar, which can be used as is for industrial flooring or polished - as was the case here - when used for showrooms, offices or apartments.
