From distillery to contemporary residence
Exel Vervoordt Real Estate recently completed an unusual project designed by Stéphane Beel Architects: the restoration and reconversion for residential use of a former malt distillery. Interior designer Arjaan De Feyter turned the third floor of the former silos into a striking 200 sq. m apartment. Located just outside Antwerp, Belgium, the four cylindrical structures - one of which has been given straight walls - are linked by short corridors. The first silo contains the studio and bathroom; the second, the living room; the third, the bedroom and second bathroom while the fourth - squared - silo hosts the kitchen and dining area. A color palette ranging through grey, silver-flecked ash and titanium blends effectively with the natural materials used on the interior, their shades carefully chosen to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The doors of the built-in bedroom cupboards are in silver-toned wood, as are the doors leading to the dining room. The made-to-measure shelves in the kitchen are in titanium-colored travertine marble. Wardrobes and cupboards have been finished in iron gall ink and carefully hand polished. The former silo walls have been left in their original unrendered concrete state and given a coat of mineral paint. A perfect match for the general color scheme, Microtopping®, the special liquid and polymer cement mix by Ideal Work®, was chosen for the flooring. Suitable for interiors and exteriors, Microtopping® creates 3-mm-thick continuous join-free surfaces. Its natural appearance and texture, along with the possibility of modulating both color intensity and tone, allow the covering to blend harmoniously with furniture and pre-existing finishes, giving environments a pleasing sense of unity.
