When investing new facilities, the winemaking industry has realized the advantage of conveying and reinforcing brand image through new architecture. 47 Anno Domini is a new winemaking plant in the countryside near Treviso, in Italy’s Veneto region, located between the Sile and Piave rivers. Architect practice Roberto Del Do in collaboration with Michelangelo Bonotto have used three types of material - wood, glass and steel - to create a design that speaks of the company’s research effort, its modernity and creativity in the whole winemaking process. A multi-functional space, the plant is much more than a rural winemaking facility. It is also a venue for art, fashion, music, architecture, design and poetry-reading as well as private functions and conferences. The facility is made up of two adjacent buildings: one, the winemaking and storage area; the other, a porticoed, public-access building for events, wine tasting and sales. The choice of materials reinforces an architectural programme designed to highlight the views and perspectives from and towards the building, and blend the building with the surrounding countryside. The interior distribution plan connects the various function-specific areas, creating an itinerary through the facility in the same order as the wine production and aging sequence. The start and finishing point of this interior circuit is the “glazed eye”, a bow window in glass and steel giving sweeping views over the 25-hectare vineyard. The building has an exterior protective ventilated envelope in ProdEX, a high-pressure laminate wood panel, made by Prodema. The cladding requires no maintenance. It combines the warmth and character of wood with high performance and longevity conferred by a cellulose and resin core. The great application flexibility of ProdEX panels means they could be installed with different joint-width spacing, so creating a pattern of asymmetrical lines on the facade. This is shown off to great effect at night with a system of backlighting, making the architecture a key attraction in its natural setting.
