This design by the Domanski - Domanski Innenarchitekten practice for the Berufskolleg school in Wesel in Germany was born from the need to overhaul a building constructed in the second half of the 20th century. The upgrade was meant not only to allow the installation of more advanced technology, but also to create a healthy, comfortable and rational environment for the children and teachers to learn and work in.
The central atrium was turned into a dominant feature. Originally a gloomy spot, it was made into an airy internal piazza topped by a glass roof to allow in natural light. The social, circular benches on the square are located around an Amstel King, a large house-tree plant. The use of shapes and colours was given primary importance in the design of the sizeable, three-storey open space that is now visually linked to the exterior. Simple shapes - squares, rectangles, circles - are used on the floor, made with Marazzi tiles, the cladding for the sidewalls overlooking this empty space, the benches and even the central flowerbed.
The square panels for the cladding combine white and colours without any specific pattern. This design choice helps make the setting more lively, especially because of the dynamic colour hints picked up on the floor, which was done with anthracite grey Soho porcelain stoneware tiles (60x60 and 60x120 cm) and coloured inserts. The coloured tiles - blue, green, red, yellow - are square (60x60 cm) and from the SistemA range of crystallised porcelain stoneware tiles.
