Barkow Leibinger: Revolutions of Choice

Barkow Leibinger Architects

The Architects Series – a Documentary on: Barkow Leibinger, is the 19th event in this exhibition format curated by the THE PLAN magazine for Iris Ceramica Group. This time round, the event includes a lecture by Frank Barkow, one of the two founders of the Barkow Leibinger architectural firm, on “Revolutions of Choice”.

Founded in 1993 by Frank Barkow and Regine Leibinger in Berlin, the studio’s design approach, visible in their architectural output, builds on the relationship of the three fundamental concepts of teaching, research, and architectural practice. Recently, the firm has, in all three areas, focused on ways that digital manufacturing and mass prototyping may be integrated into architectural processes to help create new spatial typologies. Applied to every design challenge, over the years the firm’s approach has enabled it to develop projects in Germany and internationally, their high quality warranting a great deal of publication coverage and awards.

Accolades include the DAM Prize for Architecture in Germany in 2009, the Honor Award for Architecture from the American Institute of Architects in 2010 for a canteen in Ditzingen, and the Holcim Global Innovation Prize in 2012 for their “Smart Material House” in Hamburg; more recently, the AIA Honor Award for Architecture, the German Steel Construction Award in 2019 for the Trumpf Smart Factory in Chicago, and the BSA Honor Award for Design Excellence for the Harvard Artlab. The firm has received the “Marcus Prize for Architecture” for its work in the architectural field.
