722 Ash Street, rural charm through a contemporary lens
By Editorial Staff -

Designed by Studio 804, 722 Ash Street draws its inspiration from the typical farmhouses of America’s Midwest, adding cutting-edge design and technologies into the mix.

The project is located in North Lawrence, an affluent neighborhood near Lawrence, Kansas. The property backs onto a levee path that extends for nine miles along the north bank of the Kansas River. The area is known for its good quality soil, large trees, and plots of varying sizes. Towering grain elevators, and the roar of freight trains and trucks are just blocks away. North Lawrence is popular with people who want to be close to Lawrence’s bustling downtown area yet far enough away that they’re not affected by the various restrictions that apply there. Here it’s possible to live a more rural life style, surrounded by large gardens, garages, and shops.

722 Ash Street reflects the character of North Lawrence and the Levee Trail area. The design, by Studio 804, was inspired by the typical farmhouses of the Midwest. These timeless buildings provide everything for daily life. The 722 Ash Street residence comprises a primary house and an adjoining accessory dwelling. A feature of the district where the project is located, these Accessory Housing Units are small, separate residences on the same lot as a main house that can be rented for income or used by family members. They’re a part of local efforts to increase living density levels closer to the city center instead of continuing to expand into the countryside.

Both buildings have technologies and design features aimed at minimizing their environmental impact and ensuring low energy consumption and costs. A 4.9 kW solar array is installed on the one south-facing roof, while the building envelope is designed to have sufficiently high insulation performance for LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council.
