An encounter between industrial style and natural materials comes to life in the design of Zero40 Brewery, a brewery and restaurant in the heart of Hyderabad, India. Designed by 23 Degrees Design Shift, Zero40 Brewery is a social hub that celebrates the city’s rich cultural heritage. Here, guests can enjoy traditional Indian dishes, such as Hyderabadi biryani, and freshly brewed beers, while surrounded by nature.

Zero40 Brewery occupies half a hectare of land comprising an orchard, with ten mango trees and a huge neem tree, and various outdoor spaces with seating surrounded by greenery.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is how the circular wall surrounding the structure creates a break between the built and natural environments, shifting attention to the building’s central courtyard. This feature not only enhances the project but also reflects the architects’ intention to merge the architecture into the natural environment, as if the construction itself were adapting to, and respecting, the existing greenery.

Intended to optimize their efficiency and create distinct zones, the interiors occupy different levels. Spaces range from a relaxation area in the shade of the mango trees to the gravel courtyard and an amphitheater for hosting outdoor performances. The kitchen floor is 15 cm above street level to prevent flooding, while the beer production areas are on the second floor, leaving space downstairs for a large bar.

A fusion of natural materials and industrial design

With the use of exposed steel, Zero40 Brewery has an industrial aesthetic but contrasts this with the warm tones of timber, and red and gray brick. The interiors also reflect this style, with double-height spaces, mezzanine floors, and weathering steel creating a visually dynamic environment.

Integrating natural elements, such as timber and greenery, into the design breaks up the monotony of raw materials, while natural light filters through a large window, creating intriguing interplays of light and shade inside. The outdoor areas have timber benches, metal armchairs, and high tables with wicker stools, offering guests a choice of different atmospheric settings.
