Parkville, Melbourne’s biomedical precinct, is home to the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Australia’s leading such facility and a top-class training center for physicians and paramedics. The complex is separated from the Royal Melbourne Hospital by a major road, so pedestrian bridges were built to create easy access between the centers for visitors and medical staff. The highly efficient design by the Silver Thomas Hanley, Design Inc and McBride Charles Ryan architecture practices matches the quality of work done in the buildings with the constructions themselves to create a symbol of hope and faith in the future. The 130,000 sq.m complex rises 13 floors, with two basement levels, and an additional four parking floors. The heart of the complex is a large, light atrium, the fulcrum for easily moving around the center. The facility has 160 overnight inpatient beds, 110 same-day beds and treatment spaces, 8 operating rooms, 28 treatment rooms, 8 radio therapy bunkers and 97 doctors’ studios. There is also plenty of educational and training space, with classrooms, seminar areas and research laboratories. Mapei provided technical consultancy and products to create waterproof and level substrates, and to install the vinyl walls and floors and the self-laying textile tiles. The choice of products was based on performance, low environmental impact and the health of the builders and future patients, medical staff and visitors, especially as the latter was a key part of the design brief.
