UNStudio: Value Design - The Expansion of the Profession

UNStudio

The Architects Series – A documentary on: UNStudio is the 23rd instalment of this event organized by THE PLAN magazine for Iris Ceramica Group, including the lecture "Value Design - The Expansion of the Profession" by Founder and Principal Architect of UNStudio, Ben van Berkel.

Established by Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos in 1988, UNStudio is a Dutch architectural practice specializing in architecture, interior design, product design, urban development, and infrastructure projects.

The name is short for “United Network Studio,” reflecting the collaborative nature of the practice. Over 30 years of working on international projects, UNStudio has constantly expanded its creative scope by building a multinational network of consultants, partners, and professionals. Together with full-service offices in Amsterdam, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Dubai and Melbourne, this network makes it possible for the studio to work efficiently anywhere in the world. With over 140 projects completed in Asia, Europe, and North America, the studio continues to expand its global presence with new projects in China, South Korea, Australia, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates.

UNStudio’s mission is to design for lasting impact and contribute to the societal challenges of urbanization, climate change, aging populations, and socioeconomic inequality. This multidisciplinary team has developed a highly flexible approach that incorporates parametric design and collaboration with numerous specialists in related fields to produce projects that make our lives healthier and with minimal impact on the planet. Another hallmark of the studio’s approach is its commitment to the promotion and practice of sustainable design, always with a keen focus on environmental issues.

Since it was established, UNStudio has worked on a wide range of international projects, spanning public buildings to infrastructure, offices, residences, designer goods, and urban masterplans. Its current projects are FOUR, a mixed-use building in Frankfurt; the Wasl Tower in Dubai; and STH BNK by Beulah in Melbourne. Some of its most important completed projects include the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Arnhem Central Station, Raffles City Hangzhou in China, Mobius House in the Netherlands, and the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam.
