Gilded Reflections and Murals
The volumetric profile of the Ugo Foscolo school complex in Arcugnano, with five above-ground floors, is characterized by the rotation of the first three floors, an innovation that allowed the architects at Settanta7 to create numerous shaded areas around the building.
The metal structure, with X-Lam panels, is very safe and highly environmentally sustainable, while the internal spaces are designed to encourage innovative teaching and allow multiple uses of each room. The addition of a separate entrance also means sections of the school can be used by the local community as well as the pupils. Several international artists – including Bart Smeets, Jason Naylor and Dasic Fernández – were commissioned to create the murals on the building’s façades, while the architects were supported by KME’s Architectural Solutions division to define the rest.
The composition of the school’s fronts was then completed with a coating of TECU® Gold, a special copper alloy from KME with a golden color that is designed to last. A unique, custom-made fold was manufactured for the panels to create an effect where natural light hits the faceted façade, producing fascinating iridescent reflections.
Like other alloys in the KME catalog, TECU® Gold is highly durable and resistant to the elements, requiring minimal maintenance. The chosen cladding, which is completely recyclable, fits in perfectly with this complex, designed with the desire to transmit to new generations the values of culture, creativity, technology and respect for the environment.
