Life a stone’s throw from the Cuneo Alps

Two homes redeveloped to integrate into a varied urban fabric

Just a stone’s throw from Italy’s Cuneo Alps, Studio FTG Architettura e Ingegneria has created two single-family homes by redeveloping a former industrial building. A key aim of the project was to transform the area and integrate it into the surrounding urban fabric, comprising single-family homes in a variety of architectural styles. The result is a visual dialogue that merges new and existing architecture.

The rectangular lot made it possible to site both homes to optimize exposure to the sun. Architecturally, the homes comprise distinctive volumes that communicate through a synthesis of essential geometric shapes, harmonizing with the setting.

The connection between inside and out is underscored by extensive aluminum-framed glazing, which allows natural light to enter the interiors and accentuates visual links with the surrounding landscape.

Villa CT: a fluid transition between living spaces and panorama

This relationship with the natural environment is further explored in the essential design of Villa CT, with its fluid transition between living spaces and the surrounding panorama. Outside, the home features a brick veneer in an elegant shade of gray. Architectural elements such as exposed beams and columns define porticos, creating an intriguing interplay of volumes and shadows that enriches the visual experience.

Characterized by its sloping roof, the single-level wing of the house contains both the living and sleeping areas at ground level. Upstairs, there is a study with a glass floor and an extra bedroom that overlooks green roofs.

Villa GG: a design inspired by the architecture of Northern Europe

The geometric design of Villa GG brings to mind typically Northern European architecture, with details such as the top floor roof window on the same plane as the sloping roof and the double-standing seam cladding on the ventilated façade flush with the roofline.

Upon entering at ground level, the living and sleeping areas unfold in an open-plan living space that includes a double-height area with an exposed timber loft, creating a welcoming and bright atmosphere. Upstairs, the loft and bedrooms have access to a large terrace with views of the Alps, allowing residents to fully appreciate the surrounding natural wonders.

These design and material elements not only enhance the appearance of the two homes, but also improve energy efficiency and environmental integration, making them exemplary models of contemporary architecture sensitive to the natural context.
