Founded in Aarhus, Denmark in 1986, the 3XN international architecture practice took very little time to establish its own strong, creative identity. Today, 3XN employs 140 architects of 20 different nationalities, between its main office in Copenhagen and offices in Stockholm, Sydney, New York and London. In 2007, the practice set up GXN, a special unit dedicated to innovation and development.

For three decades now, one of the practice’s founders, Kim Herforth Nielsen, has been the driving force that has made 3XN one of the world’s most innovative international architectural practices, pursuing projects in Europe, Australia, Canada and the United States. Guided by a vision of architecture that is driven by ongoing research into human needs and behavior, in his role as creative director Kim Nielsen is in charge of architectural quality from idea to execution. Thanks to his experience, he is often invited to sit on the juries of international architectural competitions. He has worked as a lecturer at academies of art and universities around the world, served as Chairman of the Danish Arts Foundation Architecture Committee from 2014-2018, and is co-Chair of the Van Alen International Council. Nielsen holds a number of honorary posts at academic institutions, including the Aarhus School of Architecture and the Delft University of Technology; he has received some of his country’s highest honors, including the Knights’ Cross of the Order of Dannebrog, which Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II awarded him in 2000, and in 2019 the CF Hansen Medaille, Denmark’s highest award for architects.
