The soul of tropical modernism comes to life in Sumatra Villa, with every detail reflecting harmony, beauty, and a deep connection with the essence of place.

An architectural style that evolved in the hot, humid climates of western Africa in the 1940s, tropical modernism has been embraced post-independence in countries such as India, Ghana, and Sri Lanka as a symbol of modernity and progress, and a break with colonial culture. It’s closely connected with Geoffrey Bawa, one of the most influential architects of his day. Bawa didn’t simply design buildings, but spatial experiences; he didn’t as much build in space, but with space. His designs blend extreme climate, wild vegetation, and local traditions with colonial influences to create immersive, sensorial architecture that’s deeply rooted in the tropical landscape.

A dream wedding location …

Since the pandemic, interest in outdoor weddings and events has surged. Previously a nursery, the property has taken on a completely new role as an event space. With the site measuring 30x30 m, the architects aimed to optimize the space for the project to allow for future expansions.

The project is a masterpiece of symmetry, with the two identical structures arranged in a U. With the twin villas designed to host the groom and the bride, they are a key element of the transformation of the site into a wedding venue. Upon arrival, guests step into an oasis of palms and other natives, with water pools reflecting the lush greenery all around.

A stone path leads to the entrance of each of the villas, which opens onto the living and dining area. The open-plan design creates a seamless connection between these airy and welcoming communal spaces. In both villas, the main and second bedrooms are on either side of the living room. With a bathroom that offers a spa-like experience, the master suite is a place for rejuvenation.

The rooms have large sliding glass doors and windows that create visual continuity between the greenery and water pools outside.

… that supports local trades

The thatched ceiling, with timber rafters and meticulously crafted bamboo mats, is the highlight of the project. The choice of this material not only enhances the aesthetics of the villa, but also helps lower the temperatures inside. This ceiling captures the essence of a Balinese villa, immediately transporting guests to a world of tropical elegance and serenity.

The design uses regionally sourced concrete for the walls and floors. The wall behind the bed, however, is exposed stonework, creating a lively contrast with the villa’s modern design.

To support both local trades and traditional techniques, the furnishings use locally sourced natural materials, such as rattan and cane. By using local materials and working with local trades, the project pays tribute to the principles of tropical modernism while also contributing to preserving the region’s culture and heritage.
