Stone Nest Amphitheater: a sustainable amphitheater carved from stone
By Editorial Staff -

“Shi Wozi” (stone nest) was the name that the people of Wujiatuan, in the city of Weihai, China, gave to the ancient local stone well. 3andwich Design and He Wei Studio worked on the site to create the Stone Nest Amphitheater, an outdoor amphitheater to host community services, such as public meetings, as well as cultural and recreational activities, resolving the issue of the lack of public facilities in the area. The structure is also suitable for presenting live music, theater, and other events, enriching the quality of life for the entire village of Wujiatuan.

The project covers an area of approximately 16 thousand square feet (1500 m2). The natural cliff, which was left untouched, became the backdrop to the stage, its arched shape enhancing the acoustics in the amphitheater. Seating is arranged around the stone wall, gradually rising from the stage at ground level.

A new space has been created under the tiered seating, providing storage areas, public restrooms, and a café. The façade of the building has a series of French windows. The thick walls between them are intended to create a feeling of entering a natural cave.

The building materials comprise local stone laid using traditional methods, with most of the stones sourced from the rubble excavated when the site was leveled. The architects from 3andwich Design and He Wei Studio followed sustainable construction guidelines, with all materials locally sourced and the façade built using highly sustainable traditional techniques.
