Motorized Blinds to Protect Glazed Façades from the Sun
In the Santa Giulia district of Milan, the Spark One and Spark Two buildings, designed respectively by Progetto CMR and WIP Architetti, are the centerpiece of a mixed-use urban upgrade project that, due to its proximity to the Rogoredo train and subway stations, gains symbolic significance as a gateway to the city.
Sustainability, efficiency, connectivity and community are the cornerstones upon which the project has been built, striving to meet the highest energy standards. The entire Spark Business District has in fact received a 5-star rating from Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB), while the Spark One + Spark Two and Spark 3 complex achieved LEED Neighborhood Gold certification. Such an achievement did not come without meticulous consideration of every detail and thoughtful choice of each functional element. A prime example of this is found, for example, in the choice of Pellini’s Tende e Sistemi technical blinds for interiors, expertly designed and installed as part of a joint venture with Omnitex. The two buildings boast predominantly glass façades. These are enhanced by sunshade slats in changeable shapes that create a captivating interplay of light and shadow, and – especially in conjunction with the belt courses – contribute to the elegant dynamism of the façades.
With a significant expanse of glazed surfaces, the installation of over 2,000 Latemar Motore Pellini roller blinds has proven indispensable. They feature Verosol SilverScreen filtering aluminum-coated fabric, boasting impressive solar reflectance of 82%, IR emissivity of 0.05, and an openness factor of 3%, ensuring optimal insulation while preserving unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. In some specific areas, such as the meeting rooms, where complete darkness is sometimes required, Verosol 890 blackout metallized fabric was chosen. Its external aluminum coating, similar to that of the filter version, was crucial in maintaining a consistent esthetic throughout the façade. The electric operation of the blinds and the possibility of synchronizing them in certain zones gives the user unparalleled flexibility in managing and regulating the level of solar protection.
Spark One and Spark Two currently boast LEED Core&Shell Platinum certification. In addition, Spark One is WELL Gold-certified, while Spark Two is in the process of obtaining the same certification.
