The Room Without Windows: Drawings for Dora

By Editorial Staff -
MEDIT has participated in the project

The Dora project, promoted by Wip for People Onlus and strongly supported by Medit, aims to design and build an all-inclusive educational center, health clinic, school, nursery and cafeteria for the community of Antanandava, a remote village in Madagascar that is often put to the test by the rainy season. This ambitious project aims to address basic needs such as access to education, healthcare and nutrition, with the goal of improving the quality of life for locals and transforming the area into an inclusive and sustainable community. The creation of this “village within a village” was meticulously planned by a team of expert designers, who also considered the needs of nearby communities, designing accessible,
easy-to-navigate pathways. To promote this initiative, Medit launched “The Room Without Windows: Drawings for Dora” – 18 artworks created pro bono by various architects and designers currently shaping the city of Milan, who are at the forefront of raising awareness around the theme of solidarity. In the first event of this initiative, the artworks were exhibited in Milan at the BAM Open Air Design 2024 showcase in Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano (BAM) city park from October 2 to 5, and then auctioned off to help fund the center’s construction.

“The Room Without Windows” embodies the concept of an open, barrier-free space where architecture, dreams and nature converge. The works on display, ranging from freehand drawings to abstract creations, delve into this boundless theme, with architects and artists illustrating their own interpretations of a “room without windows”, inviting the public to reflect on this and dream.

In collaboration with Caimi, an international leader in furniture design and acoustic solutions, the exhibition used innovative acoustic materials to display the artworks printed on sound-absorbing panels wrapped in Medit’s curtain systems and fabrics. This fusion of art and technology not only fills the space with beauty, but also generates a harmonious and sustainable environment.

The project, endorsed by the Lombardy Regional Government, the City of Milan, the Catella Foundation and BAM, unfolds in four stages: an outdoor exhibition for the Milanese public, the initial charity auction held on October 16, 2024, another exhibition scheduled for early 2025, and a final charity event featuring an auction of the original works on paper.

Through the Dora project, Medit, together with Wip for People, is extending a helping hand to the village of Antanandava to ensure the project continues to support the local community. Construction is underway, with terraces now in place for a total of 11 small buildings that will house the school, cafeteria and medical clinic.
