A new film and television studio for the British entertainment scene
Shinfield Studios, the new film and TV studio located in Reading, Berkshire, is set to make a significant contribution to both the local community and UK's creative industry. Designed by Scott Brownrigg for the US-based independent platform Shadowbox Studios, this vast campus is set to become the largest new-build film and TV production studio in the UK.
Shinfield Studios' campus is distinguished by its 18 sound stages, each ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 sq. m, all climate-controlled and provided with state-of-the-art equipment. These spaces have been designed with flexible layouts to meet modern production standards. The facility also includes 38 multifunctional workshops, catering to a wide range of production requirements, from costume and wardrobe to the management of action vehicles and armory.
At the heart of the campus, a café and a canteen provide a space where production teams can relax and socialize while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
The adoption of an innovative steel twin wall system has allowed the facilities to meet the high acoustic standards required by modern productions, while also reducing the amount of materials and trades needed on-site. The use of prefabricated structures and phased assembly was crucial in adhering to the strict construction timelines. The project, which began in 2021, saw the construction of over 7,000 sq. m of operational space within the first six months of work.
Sustainability has been a fundamental pillar in the design and construction of Shinfield Studios. Along with high on-site efficiency, the lightweight structure offers a more sustainable alternative to concrete. Built to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification, the complex employs solutions such as air source heat pumps and solar panels to provide renewable energy sources.
