Richmond Olympic Oval

Host to the speed skating competitions at the last Olympic Games, the Richmond Olympic Oval occupies a huge site running along the river Fraser just a few minutes from Vancouver International Airport. Its elegant heron’s wing shape - the heron is the official symbol of Richmond - is echoed by the clean roof span that tapers gradually to a fine tip, creating a external portico. Translucent polycarbonate walls on the south, east and west façades reflect the changing daylight, a reference also to the flowing waters nearby. The transparent glazed north façade offers magnificent views over the river Fraser and surrounding mountains.
After the Olympic and Paralympic Games were over, Richmond Olympic Oval was turned into a multi-purpose facility with a gym, 200 m track and top athlete training centre. Mapei supplied the materials for a range of work necessary during the renovation.
Sections of the main stands around the oval competition track had suffered damage. The dressing room and fitness areas were given rubber-based flooring and a swimming pool was built. Where necessary, the track was repaired, levelled and then rubber clad. Finally, the oval surface was clad in wood.
