Restoration of the Gallerie dell’Accademia
Edited By Editorial Staff -
The Gallerie dell’Accademia complex in Venice is located in the main centre of the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità, an ancient Venetian confraternity. The buildings that make up the complex have had various uses over the centuries, and have been subject to numerous interventions by architects such as Andrea Palladio, Giorgio Massari, Gianantonio Selva and Francesco Lazzari. In the second most recent works, carried out in the 1940s, the buildings were partially restored under the direction of Carlo Scarpa. The exhibition spaces recently underwent major restoration work to take advantage of the room made available to the museum following the transfer of the Accademia di Belle Arti to other premises. Tobia Scarp’s restoration project involved the strengthening of foundations and walls, and the upgrading of the buildings’ installations. The selection of door and window frames required taking into account both their appearance in terms of the historic architectural setting, and the need for high thermal and acoustic performance. The product chosen was Secco Sistemi’s thermal-cut OS2 in burnished brass, which provides a reduced frame size and excellent insulation properties. Fire protection for the new stairs in the 19th-century section was provided by Ew category frames in painted steel from Secco Sistemi’s AF range. Additional benefits of these frames include low maintenance costs and durability, including in harsh conditions such as the salt air environment of Venice.
