“Haus”, Golden Goose Headquarters
Haus, the new maxi hub for Golden Goose, seamlessly blends craftsmanship, art and culture. Situated in Marghera (Venice), the historic home for the brand’s headquarters, the complex was created through the collaboration of Golden Goose’s architectural team and the ML Architettura studio, supported by Toptaglio, a general contractor specializing in building redevelopment.
The 6,200 sq. m-upgrade and extension focused on the sustainable restoration of the entire area, maintaining the existing structures as far as possible, similar to the approach taken with Marelli 10, the brand’s Milanese headquarters.
One of the focal points of the project in Marghera is the Manovia building, a warehouse dating back to the 1950s that has undergone major renovation. The goal was to create a facility with excellent structural, thermal and acoustic performance, while preserving the historic brick exterior walls as a nod to its heritage. The original vaulted roof had to be demolished and replaced with sheet metal covering, which required the addition of a steel structure to ensure the stability of the existing walls. A total white finish was applied to the interior.
The restoration of the Playground-Auditorium building, also originally a warehouse, was done while preserving the entire external envelope. The exterior façades were covered with a ventilated micro-perforated sheet metal cladding, and the interior was completely clad with a new insulating layer and pressed wood fiber panels made from natural, sustainable materials.
The combination of modern technologies and the preservation or recovery of the buildings’ historical elements also made it possible to completely overhaul the electrical and climate control systems, ensuring they were seamlessly integrated with the existing infrastructure. Inside, a retractable seating system allows the space to be transformed from an auditorium into a large multifunctional open space.
Haus is a wonderful example of how existing structures can be successfully re-purposed, and how innovation does not have to be limited to finding better ways to restore old buildings, but can also play a role in new construction. In fact, the need to restore the historic part of the complex is combined with the need to create new spaces, complete with finishes and a modern fit-out.
In addition to the overhaul of three buildings with different uses (including the auditorium, the museum area, the multimedia pathways, the shop area, the historical archive and the offices), the project included the construction of two new volumes: the Academy, which connects all the parts of the complex, and the reception kiosk, both of which overlook the inner square, where a water basin has been created to house a sculpture by Fabio Viale.
The balance between the typical high-end retail finishes and industrial spaces reflects a desire to experiment with new materials and styles, and to foster a dialog between them. The contrast of industrial concrete floors with golden metal finishes, combined with the shiny silver lacquer of the furniture and the flocked walls with a slightly unfinished look, creates environments of great elegance while maintaining a strong connection to the industrial past.
