The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) is in Doha’s Education City, a campus run by the non-profit Qatar Foundation that, with its world-class universities and medical research centres, illustrates the importance the foundation places on education, the country’s urban development and other such matters.
Designed by Arata Isozaki and RHWL Architects, the complex is a clear example of architectural excellence. The visual fulcrum is undoubtedly the imposing 250 m front elevation supported, for its entire length, by a metal structure that mimics a stylized Sidra tree, the icon of Qatar and symbol of the Qatar Foundation. The QNCC is a conference centre without equal. It is a place to meet, exchange ideas and communicate in a complex that meets the most stringent LEED certification requirements, which translates into guaranteed significant energy savings. The solar installation extends for 3.500 sq m, providing 12.5% of the power needed and the air-conditioning system focuses only on areas where cooling is required. Inside, no detail was too small, ensuring optimal comfort for the 40. 000 sq m exhibition area, the multi-purpose conference centre that can cater for 4.000 people, the 3 auditoriums, the theatre with seating for 2.300 people and the 52 meeting rooms. In addition to trade fairs, congresses and conferences, one can enjoy concerts and plays ‘under the Sidra tree’.
The huge facade, with its evident organic references, is visually striking and conveys a real sense of openness, almost drawing visitors in. The entrance to the conference centre, in parallel with the façade, produces a similar feeling and has a wall where the inbuilt Bega lighting system adds the crowning touch. Bega was also tasked with improving access to the QNCC by adding lamps providing asymmetrical light distribution along the roads around the centre and it also supplied all of the lights for the facade, which really stands out against the night skyline with its Bega high performance 56.000 lumen spotlights.
