The building in Quebec blends modern design and natural materials, providing a refined and sustainable home that is perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape
Designed by MRDK, the Q8 Residence is nestled in the Quartier 8 development of Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Encompassing 280 m2, this home seamlessly blends contemporary design with its forested surroundings.
Completed in Spring 2024, the Q8 Residence stands as an exemplar of context-sensitive residential architecture, harmonizing materiality, spatial fluidity, and programmatic clarity. The house is the result of a synergy between architecture, craftsmanship, and interior design.
Solid facade with minimal opening on the roadside ensures privacy and energy efficiency, while generous glazing along the southern side floods the interiors with natural light and frames serene views of the forest.
The house is articulated through staggered volumes, each differentiated by its material expression, creating a dynamic and tactile result. White cedar shingles lend a light, natural texture to one section, while vertical larch siding introduces warmth and an earthy tonal richness.
The garden wall, made of board-formed concrete, anchors the composition with a contemporary solidity. A distinctive fold at the midpoint introduces a carport, connecting the main house to a storage room while offering a welcoming threshold.
The residence’s interiors unfold with a deliberate sense of compression and release. Inside, the low-ceilinged mudroom transitions into a soaring double-height living space where kitchen, dining, and lounge areas coexist under expansive ceilings.
A primary suite on the ground floor opens to a terrace with an outdoor shower, while the upper floor features three additional bedrooms, a cozy reading nook, and a playful custom bunk bed.
The southern glazing not only frames the lush forest but also establishes a seamless transition to the exterior, where a lounge area, complete with an interior/exterior fireplace and swim/spa, serves as an extension of the living space.
A restrained material palette—light and dark-stained pine veneer, lime washed walls, and larch wood—creates a warm yet refined atmosphere that mirrors the home’s natural surroundings.
