Turning a loft into usable space can be essential in upgrading a building and carving out much needed new room.

This design by Claudia Biondi for a private apartment in Bologna not only adds three new rooms and a whole host of options for enjoying the upper floor of this home, but also optimizes the natural light, which comes in through a large central section with Velux skylights (3x3 and 2x1.5 m).

These large windows create an opening through which the sun’s rays can reach deep into every room, drawing out the light, warm colors of the parquet and the white and pearl grey walls. These roof windows have solar-powered blinds and shutters (fed by panels installed on the shutters themselves) to adjust the amount of light according to the time of day and season of the year, to completely cover the skylights and to regulate the amount of summer heat let in.

As night falls, the lighting built into the masonry, which is almost invisible during the day, can be programed to come on as it is linked to a home automation system.

The upgrade of this loft area was completed with the addition of two terraces that extend the living space outdoors, where the view is of the gentle hills around Bologna.
