The rooms, courtyard, swimming pool, tennis court, garden – every part of this residence designed by LINE Architecture in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades has spectacular views over Santa Monica Bay, a landscape of endless beaches lapped by the Pacific Ocean and caressed by the Californian sun that brings to mind Hollywood movies and TV shows.

The home occupies two lots with an area of around 4000 m2. An earlier building was demolished to make way for this new home, designed for a young family that frequently entertains and to make the most of the views of the bay.

Blurring the boundaries between inside and out

Located on the western side of the lot, the main entrance faces onto the street, where the home has an orderly, aesthetically pleasing façade. The heart of the residence is its large living area, which, via two large pivoting glass doors, opens onto a courtyard with a swimming pool, extending the inside of the home to the outside.

This is a single-level home with an L-shaped plan, the living room occupying the point where the two arms meet and mark the boundary of the lushly planted internal courtyard. The most intimate part of the home is the night area, with a main bedroom, two children’s rooms, and a small office. Elsewhere in the home are a guest room and entertainment areas, including the kitchen and dining room, both off the living room, which, in turn, has access to a media room.

The living spaces continue beyond the walls of the home, with an outdoor bar, second kitchen, pergola with a dining area, and a living room with an open-air fireplace positioned to catch the stunning sunsets over Santa Monica Bay. The garden has a series of terraces: from the level of the swimming pool, you descend to the tennis court, and then to another green area with a barbeque and mini golf course.

Spacious and filled with natural light, the rooms have warm timber paneling and parquet floors that, in some rooms, extend to the walls and ceiling. In the kitchen and bathrooms, however, there are veined marble finishes in light tones, except for one bathroom that breaks the pattern with dark marble with light veining. Natural light from skylights brings the marble finishes to life in the kitchen and some bathrooms.

Complementing the interiors is a sequence of artworks displayed on the walls in gallery style. These interact with elegant pendant lamps and sconces.
