The Sala Terrena in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice, houses a cycle of paintings by Tintoretto. The lighting of the room was recently redesigned. Collaborating on the project were Osram and Alberto Pasetti Bombardella. The project had three key objectives: conservation, proper perception, and chromatic interpretation, that is, to protect the works from photochemical damage while optimizing viewing conditions. The new lighting design also toke into account the constraints imposed by the architectural context as well as issues stemming from the large canvases. The system developed, dubbed Batwing, runs along the rows of columns that separate the aisles of the space. Each element comprises 32 COINlight Advanced LED modules, with two wavelengths of white (3000 K and 4000 K), shielded to minimize glare and reflections. Modules with different wavelengths alternate along the lighting fixture, aligning with the artworks. The simultaneous use of two colour temperatures creates a more neutral light, while the mixing effects achieved using the EASY Color Control light management system makes it possible to create a sequence of eight lighting “scenarios” that highlight the dominant and most interesting colours, while balancing natural and artificial light. This new lighting management system also reduces energy consumption and maintenance costs, reflecting the philosophy of the Osram Art Light Lab, set up to develop new LED technologies for lighting artworks.
