A renovation project made with regional materials
In São Paulo, Brazil, a businessman commissioned the FC Studio to transform an apartment previously inhabited by a small family into a sophisticated flat – Mota apartment in Vila Mariana neighborhood. This involved integrating spaces and removing walls to provide the client with public and private spaces that better suit his lifestyle.
The new owner’s daily routine dictated the designer’s decisions. The project was also influenced by establishing a keen understanding of the client’s particular personality. The dining room balcony, small gathering space and secluded kitchen did not suit the client. So, the balcony was transformed into a gathering space and the kitchen and social area became one unified space which was able to be enlarged by removing a bedroom and toilet.
Regional materials were used -- the wood and marble are commonly used in Brazil. The Brasilia table was inspired by the urban configuration of the country´s capital, while the Campo table is a reference to Brazilian rural plantation fields. The social space is ingratiated by a large panel of freijó wood. Perpendicular to this panel is a bookcase that disguises the entrance door and serves as a support for the client’s personal objects. There were five specific pieces of furniture designed for the apartment: Orbita dining table, Rod side table, Brasilia coffee table, Campo coffee table and Gap bench. All of them took into account the proportion and materiality of the interior design, ranging from marble, wood, and steel.
