The new Polo Tecnologico Lucchese (Lucca technology centre) is located within the Lucca eco-industrial park, established to promote environmental sustainability in the tertiary sector. The fields represented include information and communication technology, bio-architecture and sustainable housing, and virtual environments for industrial applications and cultural heritage. An objective of the design was to minimize the impact on the environment. Therefore the existing buildings were replaced without increasing the footprint. The new centre, located to the south of the city of Lucca, was designed as a ‘green port’ – a starting point and destination for cycle paths and walking trails, and a park open to all.
The buildings were designed to minimize the use of resources while reducing energy consumption through a series of coordinated measures:
· researching the optimal building orientation to maximize solar energy in winter and reduce thermal radiation in summer
· extensive insulation of the building shell
· walls with high thermal inertia
· sun-shading to keep rooms cool during summer
· use of natural light to minimize the use of artificial light · installation of photovoltaic panels to reduce electricity consumption
· use of a natural gas microturbine for heat and power cogeneration
· installation of water tanks to reduce water consumption for irrigation and amenities.
The calculated energy requirement for the new buildings is 60 per cent lower than the limits set under current sustainable building construction legislation. The complex will be among the first in Tuscany to receive certification under the Sustainable Building Council (SBC) system. This system, developed as part of the international Green Building Challenge (GBC), involves assessing the environmental performance of buildings at every stage of their life cycle: design, construction, testing and use.

Pietro Carlo Pellegrini
Pietro Carlo Pellegrini was born in Lucca, Italy, in 1957. He completed his tertiary studies in Rome and Pescara, graduating from the Pescara Faculty of Architecture in 1983. He returned to Lucca in 1985 and began his professional career.
He has taught at the IUAV (Istituto Universitario di Architettura, Venezia). In 2000 he was visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture of Delft University of Technology. In 2006 he was professor at the Scuola Superiore Europea di Architettura Urbana in Naples. He currently lectures in design at the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara and Genoa. He also coordinates the master’s degree programme ‘MASP – il progetto dello spazio pubblico’ in Lucca and is creative director of LayUp Carbonio.
Among the awards earned by his designs are a special mention at the Premio Andil Opera Prima (1992), runner-up in the Premio Dedalo alla Committenza (1999), first prize in the Ecole Award – European Conference of Leading Architects, and an honourable mention in the Premio Medaglia d'Oro all'Architettura, Triennale di Milano (2003).
He was invited to participate in the Venice Biennale in 2002 as part of the Lonely Living exhibit, in 2004 for the IX International Exhibition of Architecture, and in 2010 in the Archetipo/Prototipo in the Italian pavilion.
Highlights among his projects include the restoration and fixturing of the Lucca Cathedral Museum, the extension of a cloister, the pilgrims’ retreat and ossuary/wall of remembrance at the Santa Gemma monastery in Lucca, the Palex building in Segromigno in Monte, the Le Gemelle residential complex and Edificio Blu in Lucca, the Fondazione Lazzareschi building in Porcari, the National Comics Museum in Lucca, the Museum of the Resistance in S. Anna di Stazzema, and the new Paper Museum in Pescia (Pistoia).
Works by Pellegrini have been featured in journals magazines and books in Italy and abroad, including Pietro Carlo Pellegrini Architettura e progetti 1992–2007, Skira Editore, 2007 (various authors)
