Horizontal Space in the Past and Future

La Pervinca Complex

In Guastalla, in the flatlands of Emilia not far from the famed Po River, a couple asked Archiplan Studio to reinterpret the places of their childhood. Their property, a farm house flanked by outbuildings, required an innovative approach that would allow new forms of expression while respecting its past. The goal was to create a multifunctional complex that would include a private residence, farm-stay facilities and a bed and breakfast. This vision gave birth to La Pervinca, an architectural design where the interweaving of the historical elements of the building and its contemporary functions create an unprecedented combination.

The desire to incorporate the passage of time into the project is evident in the use made of original elements, such as the grain weights scribbled on the walls in pencil and the washed-out plaster.

This approach is complemented by the use of contemporary materials that harmonize with the context, such as Isoplam’s Deco Nuvolato flooring. The continuous, nuanced surface of this flooring not only fits into but actually enhances the soul with which La Pervinca is imbued. Used in the seemingly harsh and aseptic shades of Mineral Gray, with darker tones delicately interwoven against a light background, the floor blends seamlessly into the built environment and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Indeed, outdoors, the flooring’s slight textured effect – known as a helicopter finish – creates a practically perfect non-slip surface and excellent resistance to weathering. Indoors, the combination of cement, quartz, and pigments restores all the identity of concrete, establishing a connection with the dominant material in the construction of the central building, now transformed into a B&B. Here, the architects chose to reduce the number of partitions, instead using furniture to divide and create different zones within the rooms. These spaces include 11 rooms with bathrooms, as well as common areas for social gatherings and events.

The seamless design of the Deco Nuvolato floor – achieved through the absence of joints and seams – enhances the overall sense of continuity and contributes to its clean, uncluttered esthetic. In addition, the absence of joints not only simplifies cleaning and maintenance, but also offers practical benefits such as making the floor more resistant to dust and water damage, and less likely to stain. With a thickness of just
10 cm, the Isoplam solution meets both the technical and esthetic requirements for the project, integrating seamlessly into the space and enhancing the overall appeal of the complex.
