The expansion of this hotel in Alto Adige centers on its new Wellness Vital Garden, a green oasis with views of the Texel Mountains
Set against a backdrop of the vine-covered slopes and peaks of the Texel Mountain Group, the Klein Fein Hotel Anderlahn is on the outskirts of the village of Partschins, about nine miles from Merano in Italy’s Alto Adige region. Bolzano-based practice monovolume won the design competition for an elegant and modern extension of this four-star deluxe hotel owned by the Kaserer family.

The construction of the new building, next to the existing hotel, was done in two phases. The first involved basement level parking and the ground-level wellness center, which includes a spa, gym, and outdoor infinity pool. Completed last year, the second phase involved guest rooms on two upper levels.
The two parts of the building make use of contrasting forms and materials. The wellness center is defined by clean, straight lines and porphyry-clad façades, while upstairs has curving shapes with metal railings and timber balconies, creating a feeling of lightness and warmth.
The project also involved the restyling of some of the common spaces in the existing hotel building, including the reception, bar, and lounge.
The new Wellness Vital Garden is a 2500 m2 green oasis with views of the Texel Mountain Group. The centerpiece of the project, the wellness center, was designed to provide close contact with nature. Facing the mountains to the south, it’s an Alpine refuge where guests can relax and revitalize.
The saltwater infinity pool, next to a natural pond with a plunge pool, is the focal point of the center. Then there’s an indoor swimming pool, a solar-heated outdoor pool, and a hot tub. Guests are also offered a panoramic Finnish sauna, a herbal biosauna, a Turkish bath with Lasa marble surfaces, and experiential showers. Finally, there’s a range of relaxation areas, including the Sky Terrace with 360° views of the mountains, a solarium, a garden attached to the saunas, and a silence room.
Harmony between the interiors and the surrounding landscape has been achieved through the choice of locally sourced natural materials, and a color palette centering on browns, grays, and reds.
The expansion of the Klein Fein Hotel Anderlahn is significant for the attention paid to sustainability and low environmental impact, with the building designed to meet the KlimaHouse A Nature standard.
