A Sustainable Home with an Elegant and Comfortable Interior
House Tirol is a private home in Burggrafenamt (Burgraviato), in the northern Italian province of Bolzano on the slopes of the moraine hill on which the historic Tyrol Castle stands. Designed by British architect and designer John Pawson, who worked with local architects Markus Scherer and Maurizio Berni, the house merges seamlessly into the slope on which it is located, bringing major thermal benefits and adding to the harmonious terraced landscape that nestles below the manor of the Counts of Tyrol. Surrounded by vineyards, this new build is 450 m above sea level and faces south-west. The building has a stone exterior - adding unique, timeless charm, a green roof, helping it to blend perfectly into nature, and wooden interiors, custom-made by barth, based in Brixen.
The furnishings and finishings give the house a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere. From the slatted pergola in the courtyard to the furniture in the kitchen, living area and bedrooms, and the undulating shelves in the wine cellar, barth created these modern, elegant custom interiors using oiled chestnut wood in combination with materials such as leather and stone.
The numerous measures adopted to ensure the sustainability of the building were essential to making this a winner of the 18th CasaClima Awards in 2019. “House Tirol was also created to leave something for the future generations of a large family”, the South Tyrolean Energy Agency explained. “It is a modern exercise using the special nature of local materials to achieve a discreet and lasting timeless atmosphere”.
